Gift ideas: Hard To Shop For Boomer Moms

I love my mother-in-love. She is generous in all things, is active and beautiful and has impeccable taste. She gives great gifts herself, so naturally she’s the hardest person in my life to shop for. She has everything she needs.

When I asked my Instagram followers who was the hardest person to shop for, mother-in-laws came in at number two. Here are some tried and true things that the Boomer women in my life have loved.

WANT: Not Like A Regular Mom

  1. Digital Picture Frame: Because memories deserve a place in the living room, not just on Facebook's forgotten timeline. I love Skylight (and they’re $30 off this week) and hear good things about Aura, too. Just be sure to set the frame up for them. Bonus if you can do that before you give it to them.

  2. Pickleball Set: If I learned anything from watching The Golden Bachelor it’s that all cool Boomers love Pickleball. Look how cute this set is. Bonus points: add lessons or offer to play with them regularly.

  3. Cozy Blanket: Barefoot Dreams is the gold standard for ultimate coziness.

NEED: Practical Comforts for Everyday Life

  1. Great Unscented Moisturizer: Because by now, she's got her signature scent, and her skin deserves some extra love. If you’re over 50 you know: you need all the extra moisturizer you can get. I love all of La Roche-Posay’s face and body products and you can get those almost anywhere. Add a pretty bathroom tray and you’re good to go.

  2. Really Great Non-Stick Pan: A kitchen essential that makes cooking a joy. Just make sure it’s not too heavy. The gold standard is the Our Place Always pan. Get it in a pretty color she’ll love.

  3. Creature Comfort for a Beloved Hobby: Consider a gardening chair with a back for the green thumbs among Boomer Moms.

WEAR: Stylish Comfort for Everyday Moments

  1. Stylish Cardigan: Stop buying women robes! We have enough robes. But you know what we don’t have enough of? Cute cardigans that elevate our loungewear game. Barefoot Dreams makes several but this other one is cut in a youthful way that she might not already have and it comes in eight different colors for under $30.

  2. Cute Joggers with an Elastic Band: Ideal for staying stylish during those Pickleball matches. Gym People makes a pair that comes in 18 different colors in sizes XS to XXL and 21,000+ five star reviews.

  3. Pickleball Shoes: Again, we’re assuming she’s into Pickleball. These are a must for the Boomer Mom who's acing it on the court.

READ: Feed Her Mind and Soul

  1. Family stories - The biggest gift she can give you is your family’s history. For the tech savvy (if she will email the prompts), I recommend StoryWorth. The pen and paper version of this is Duncan & Stone’s Legacy Journal.

  2. Poetry Book - Poetry books are great to read in shorts and stops. Mary Oliver is the sentimental queen.

  3. Inspiring Non-Fiction - The truth is, she probably already has her go-to fiction authors. Instead oft for some thoughtful non-fiction. I have First Mothers: The Women Who Shaped the Presidents in my own Amazon cart right now. Make sure the card you include with this says something like, “I may not have grown up to be the president but I am who I am because of your influence” if you want to make sure your spot as favorite child is cemented.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: Home appliances. Only replace broken things or purchase if she’s specifically said she’d like a particular one.

AVOID: Scarves, robes (we have wardrobes of robes by now), decorative decor (many Boomer moms are trying to downsize), and gadgets with steep learning curves.

IF YOU HAVE TIME: Boomer moms love a personalized gift. You need a bit of runway on these, but here are my favorite items on Amazon that can be personalized and will make it to you by Christmas if you order ASAP. Also Artifact Uprising is my go-to for photo gifts.
