Lucy on her 4th birthday

Every year, on every one of her kids' birthday, does every mom stop and say, "I can't believe my baby is [blank] years old today!"? I swear this is me. Over the weekend, my youngest cub turned four years old.

Today I asked Lucy some questions:

Lu, what's your favorite color?

Red. I mean pink!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

ACTOR!

Why?

Because I think they wear eyeshadow and I can act like a baby and make people laugh.

You do make people laugh. Can you tell me a joke?

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Rudolph.

Rudolph who?

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer cow. Knock, knock!

Who's there?

Aren't you glad I didn't say knock-knock? Ah-ha-ha!

[I laugh]. Who is your best friend?

Avery. Baby Caleb. Andie. Brittain. Caroline. And mommy and daddy. And Jude. And Katy.

That's a lot of best friends. How many best friends do you have?

Uh... 300!

What are you looking forward to about being four?

Chuck E. Cheese. More birthday cake.

Every year on my kids' birthdays, I scroll back in my Instagram to see if what I said about that child is still true. Since her first birthday, these things remain: Her insatiable sweet tooth, her love of people, the fact that she delights in making others laugh, and that she seems to be set on being some kind of performer. And you know what else is still true? That I'm incredulous that this one is already another year older.
